My first introduction to the Umm Al Quwain mangroves was the breathtaking aerial view through a skydiving experience in 2005, having never known this landscape existed in the UAE before. Since this experience, I participated as a team member in the conservation of the natural mangrove habitat with the “Mangroves from the Water” art project, led by Zahidah Zeytoun Millie and with fellow artist Geraldine Chansard. Started in 2015, “Mangroves from the Water” had a touring exhibition throughout the UAE highlighting the beauty and protection of the mangroves, with an art, music and dance “Mangrove Festival” in UAQ in 2017. The project is moving internationally, with an exhibition in Geelong, Australia in 2021.
“Mangroves from the Sky” (2020) is inspired by the aerial satellite view of the Umm Al Quwain Khor Al Bhaida mangroves from Google Maps. The technique of hand-stitching is associated with nurturing, love and care: a sense of protection and devotion. Being extremely time-consuming (this artwork took over 700 (wo)man hours of labour), the handiwork symbolizes the effort and dedication it takes for the conservation of the environment, and the regeneration and resilience of nature.
Fun fact: I have used approximately 11500 meters of thread (and 700 hours) to complete this artwork.
